Now That's A Workout…

Tomorrow might be just another day to run...
~ Bill Withers
Maybe next year... Sniff, Sniff
Yep... that sums it up!!
Where do I begin blogosphere? For those that have not figured it out...Texas has been covered in a sheet of ice for the last 4 days. Now this “Arctic Blast”, as they were calling it, was extra bad because it was 79 degrees on Wednesday and by Thursday, after raining all day, it was below freezing. Over 240,000 people and businesses lost their power on Friday.
As my 5y/o son said… Elsa, from the movie “Frozen”, was sooo busy! LOL!!
Seriously...
it was colder in Texas than it was in Alaska

Now to the serious stuff. My Road Runners friends and I were supposed to run the 5 person marathon relay in the Metro PCS Marathon today, but it was cancelled due to the weather.   We had 2 teams and everything... Team Beep and Team Beep Beep... LOL... we don't get out much!!  Anyway... the race cancellation was a big deal people. This race is a Boston Marathon qualifier, it has been run in Dallas for over 40 years and it is a BIG time money maker for the racing community. Cancelling this race was a major call, but safety always comes first. It was just too dangerous for the racers out there.

The race registration fee went to the Scottish Rite Hospital which is a worthy cause. They plan on sending out our race shirts via the mail. Also if a 2013 registrant completes the 2014 MetroPCS race then they will provide the runner with two medals– the medal they would have received for finishing the 2013 race and the 2014 finisher medal. So it’s not that bad. Here’s to 2014!!

Well… now you have all of Texas, including me, slowing dying of Cabin Fever. What to do? What to Do? Enter one of my girlfriends! I get a text from my friend yesterday asking if anyone was interested in doing a workout with her on Sunday. I jumped at the chance to:
1) leave my house
2) get my workout on
3) make a deposit in my depleting endorphin bank account
I layered up and started my slow hike to the fitness center. I patiently waited for the crew to arrive. I am thinking... we are going to get in some workouts on our own, run a bit and drum up a little bit of sweat… then call it a day. Low and behold I see my friend jump out of her truck with our other friend and her hubby.  WAIT... WHAT???? HER HUBBY!?!?!
My confused knees buckled a little bit.

Let me tell you something… this chick’s better half is a personal trainer and a Camp Gladiator (yeah you heard me... GLADIATOR) Boot Camp trainer…
and his clients GET RESULTS!!
I am like… OMG… I AM GOING DIE TODAY!!!
LOL!! This little “get together workout” is going to turn into a “feel it burn, I forgot I had quads, I am never speaking to my friend again workout.”

I'm so fast... the camera can't catch me!!
Getting schooled on the 4 circuit rotations... LOL!

Kettleball lunges baby!!
WANT SOME... GET SOME!!
Her hubby proceeded to beat the endorphins out of us. I am not kidding I saw one of my sweet little endorphins sitting by the water cooler ringing a salvation army bell looking for holiday handouts! What really threw me for a loop is that I was use to a 3 circuit rotation type of boot camp.  You know... do 3 rotations through all of the stations... then move to the next circuit of exercises. Oh no… this dude had us doing circuits of 4. This was playing tricks with my mind. My form was all over the place and my quads (along with the rest of my body) were on FI-YAH!!! To say I was sweating “like a pig” would be a understatement. LOL!

Can you see my endorphins
crying in the back... LOL!
Yep... I am dying

Needless to say… it was a GREAT WORKOUT!  I was so zoned out at the end… I messed around and left my cell phone in the fitness center.  He put the hurting on us, but it was great!  I would do it again in a heartbeat!  It was the best free workout I have ever had!! LOL!  So with that… I have to say thank you to my friend for the workout invite and for thinking of little old me.
Here’s to more workouts in the future!
The ladies showed up and showed out!!
Well done ladies... well done!!
Until next time… Happy (Friend Inspired) Running!

Feeling Great…

What matters is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight -
it's the size of the fight in the dog."
~ Dwight D. Eisenhower

My anniversary flowers
What’s up blogosphere?  How is it going?  I’m doing GGGGGRRRRREEAATT (said in my best Tony the Tiger voice)!  I had a fabulous holiday weekend. My husband’s family was in town and I absolutely adore them.  I set a PR in my Thanksgiving Turkey Trot and I wasn’t really ready for it.  By that I mean I went out for dinner with the family on Wednesday and proceeded to eat my weight in pork ribs.  I didn’t mean too.  It just kind of happened.  That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.  LOL!  Needless to say… I normally do not eat like that before a race, but I did and still managed to sneak in a PR.  Not bad I say... not bad.

After trotting in the cold with my friends… I was able to warm up with the family as we watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.  I loved watching the parade as a kid.  I still get a little giddy when I see Santa’s sleigh at the end. Don’t Judge Me… LOL.  There was more family bonding as we took on the Brown Thursday shopping deals.  My hubby orchestrated a fool proof Brown Thursday plan of attack and we all had our assignments.  I personally think my running endurance really came in handy during my 4hr wait in the cold.  Just saying.  Then on Friday my hubby and I celebrated 10 years of marriage.  That’s nothing to shake a stick at.  We serve an awesome God.
Saturday brought more family time.  I can never get enough of my family.  It’s wonderful to get together for good times.  Then I watched my beloved Grambling Tigers lose in the Bayou Classic, but I am happy the boys hung in there. They even tried to do a little something, something in the 3rd quarter.  I was also able to see my girl Katniss Everdeen in her full Catching Fire glory last night.  I definitely have to work on my swimming ability.  Did you happen to catch that crazy water scene when the Hunger Games began?

As this holiday weekend comes to an end… I am mentally preparing for my next fitness challenge.  My Road Runner friends and I are participating in the Metro PCS Marathon relay on 12/8.  We are each going to run 4 – 6 miles along the 26.2 mile course.  This should be fun.  I am really looking forward to it.  After that… 2014 rolls around and with it the hope of adding a full marathon to my “completed races” column.
We will see.

If I decide to run a marathon… will you do it with me??? J
Should I hold my breath for your answer?  LOL!

Until next time… Happy (refocused) Running!

Thankful…

You’ll never know how it feels, unless you start.
You’ll never do the impossible, unless you finish.

Hey blogosphere! Today was a day to be thankful. I am thankful for so many things. A wonderful family, great friends, a roof over my head, the ability to run and so much more. However, I am incredibly thankful for my husband. Yeah… I am going to talk about him again. I can’t help it. He is my partner in life and tomorrow we will celebrate 10 years of marital bliss. It’s super cool when you can go through life’s ups and downs with your best friend by your side.

Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.

When it comes to my fitness goals… he is always there for me!  He watches my son while I go for runs.  He even ran a race or two with me this year.  I love seeing that silly grin he gets on his face when he finishes his race.  My lovebug joined me in a 4 week boot camp class this fall.  That was HILARIOUS!!  Couples that do burpees together… stay together… just sayin’.  He means the world to me and I am so thankful that God brought us together.

Happy thanksgiving to everyone out there in the blogosphere.
I hope you were able to eat some pie today!!!

Moving Music Mondays ~ Your Love Is My Drug… by Ke$ha

"The tortoise and the hare both finished the race."
~ Unknown
This week’s song is dedicated to my husband.  Hello world… I am a Ke$ha fan!  There… I said it.  I am not ashamed.  LOL!  Her songs are great to run to and she always finds a way to rhyme words with glitter.  You got to give the girl credit for that.  Seriously, how many words rhythm with glitter?

Anyway… the song is “Your Love Is My Drug”.  My hubby and I will be celebrating 10 years of marriage later this week.  I can honestly say that he is my best friend and my biggest supporter when it comes to my fitness goals.  So when this song comes on I can’t help but think of my Honey Bunny.

So today… ladies and gentlemen…
I am happy to report that my husband’s love IS my drug!
He makes my heart beat like an 808 drum. J Enjoy!

Until next time… Happy (love drug) Running!

Running Like A “Girl On Fire”…

“Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor.”
~ Effie Trinket/Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games
I am a big fan of the Hunger Games books.  With “Catching Fire” premiering this weekend… I have decided to dedicate this post to all of the loyal HG fanatics out there.  The main character, Katniss, is one bad mother… shut your mouth.  Her focus, drive and determination were the attributes that kept her going throughout all of her trials and tribulations.  Maybe that’s what attracted me to the books.  Or was it the Gale – Katniss – Peeta love triangle. J  All I know is that it takes focus, drive and determination to make through some of the fitness challenges I set for myself.  Yeah… I just tied Hunger Games into my fitness blog.  Don’t hate… appreciate… LOL!

I was pretty bummed that I couldn't run the McKinney Mini Half Marathon with my Road Runner buddies earlier this month.  I trained quite hard and was really looking forward to it.  However… life happens and I couldn’t run the race that morning.  I was able to attend a community service project that made me feel great.  God has the master plan and everything happens for a reason.

So since I was not able to run the race… I did have the focus, drive and determination to pledge to my buddies that would run a half marathon on my own. Who does that?  People that are "half crazy" and addicted to endorphins I guess.  LOL!  Anyway… I got my son taken care of and started my run.  I was feeling good.  The weather was nice.  My legs were strong.  My music was pumping.  The only problem was I got started later than I wanted too.  I was only able to get in 11 miles on my 13.1 commitment run.  It got dark way too quick... darn daylight savings time. LOL! Either way... I am glad I got out there and ran, but safety always comes first.

I think Katniss would have been proud.  With my focus, drive and determination I truly think I could out run 4 maybe even 5 of those HG tributes.  LOL!  Th-th-th-th – that’s all folks!

Until next time… Happy (run like a tribute) Running

Moving Music Mondays ~ Shake Senora... Pitbull, T-Pain & Sean Paul

The task ahead of you is never greater than the strength within you.
~ Unknown
Time to move blogosphere!
Today’s song is a running favorite of mine.  Imagine hitting a little bit of a wall.  Not the whole wall, but just a brick or two.  You just need a musical push to get yourself over the hump.  Well look no further... this song will do it.  The song is no other than… “Shake Senora”.  I remember coming up on mile 9 when this song came on during my 1st half marathon.  It was right on time!!!!

It is a great fun fitness song.  The fast beat keeps the old heart rate up.  My hubby even knows it is one my go to playlist songs.  We were in a boot camp class together and this song came on he was like…
“babe… it’s your song”!  LOL!
Whatever gets you there folks!

I have always loved Harry Belafonte’s “Jump In Line” song.  Don’t get me started on Bettlejuice (can you say classic)!!!  So it is with great pride that I tell you here and now… that I have officially shaken my “body line” to this little ditty in a Zumba class or two.  Pitbull, T-Pain and Sean Paul bring a little favor to this classic song.

Below is Zumba class getting down to my jam of the week.
Don't you just want to join in on the shaking fitness fun?  You know you do!

So I invite you to shake what your momma gave you and move that “body line”.
However, don’t shake it too hard… you don’t want to hurt anybody. Enjoy!
Until next time… Happy (Shake It Senora) Running!

Kids Are The Future

 Adults call it "working out."
Kids call it "playing."
~ My Kiddo... Trip ~

Ok… it’s been a minute since my last post, but you know how life goes.  Today’s post is all about my son Trip.  I am dedicating this post to him because my little man recently celebrated his 5th birthday.  My son is surrounded by love and God’s blessings, but you know what… this little dude is STILL 5 and he has a “Y” chromosome!  He needs to release all of that pent up “little boy energy” before it starts oozing out of his ears like a spigot.

Running from a animatronic dinosaur at his 5th birthday party
Get your exercise where you can get it! LOL!

Running with his dog ~ Texas Bluebonnets

Trip getting his first racing bib. He is so sweet!

Sometimes Trip sees me putting on my “running clothes” and he will come up to me and ask… “are you running a race today?”  I love that.  I know it’s simple, but it’s the idea that he knows mommy is about to be “active”.  I may just be running in the neighborhood, but he knows that I am about to get off my backside and move my feet.  He also understands that it makes mommy happy to do it.  This will stay with him forever.  Being active is a positive thing.
Can you spot the 4 year old at the finish line?
I think he is eating candy... LOL!
I personally was a very active child and I was involved in a lot of sports.  Looking back on it now… staying active kept me grounded, team sports gave me perspective, and winning was just plain old fun!!!  I think we, as parents, need to do our part to keep our kiddos fit and healthy.  I remember back in the day I played outside ALL DAY.  Doing everything from climbing trees, to riding bikes, to roller skating in the street, to catching bugs.  You name it… we did it and we likely did it outside.  Today’s kids stay inside too much if you ask me.  I know, I know… the world has changed a lot and the idea of my son going “down the street” to play is down right scary.  However, I go out of my way to keep my son active in several different “safe” ways.

Having fun after a race
Trip loves to run!  He is so happy when he is out there… just running. This boy has “Future Athlete” written all over him.  It was really hard on him during the winter months when I was training for my 1st half marathon.  He wanted to run with me so bad, but I could not risk him getting sick.  So I would say… you can run with me after the Easter bunny comes. When Easter came I didn’t know if he was more excited about his Easter basket or the idea that he could run outside with mommy.  It was so cute.

Getting in his swimming lessons

Since then... he has run in several Fun Runs, a virtual run and he even ran his 1st full 5K last month.  He also took swimming classes all summer long.  I think that every child (AND ADULT) should learn how to swim. Trip and I take swimming lessons at the same place.  AquaFit Plano (www.aquafitplano.com)… they are great with kids and adults.  Below are more pics of some of the fun activities Trip has participated in this year.

After winning a running medal with mommy
This is Trip after he help me run a virtual half marathon.  I actually completed the 13.1 miles by running around my neighborhood.  Trip ran about a mile with me after I was done, but you can’t tell him nothing!  He had a lot of fun that day.

Trip's 1st 5K race!!!

Trip... running his 1st 5K race

… and this Fall my little boy ran his first full out 5K race (the Haunt Jaunt in Plano).  This was a pre-Halloween race so everyone dressed up in costumes.  The Trip-a-tron and I dressed up as the Caped Crusader Batman and his trusty sidekick… Mrs. Robin.  This kid was actually doing push-ups when were lined up before the race started… WHAT!?!?  It was also a night race and there were fun Halloween scenes throughout the race.  He ran some… then walked.  He always wanted me to hold his hand when he walked so I didn’t past him… LOL!  He made sure I took a picture of him while he was running so Daddy could see him running.  He also wanted to make sure he took a “muscle picture” after the race… like his mommy does.  We had an absolute blast!
His "Muscle Picture" after his 1st 5K race
So blogosphere… if you have little ones in your life… I challenge you to keep them active and healthy.  Find out what they want to do and sign them up for it.
Hey… while you’re doing that… why don’t you sign yourself up for something too!

How your kiddo should look after a long day of playing... LOL!
Yes... that's a Batman mask painted on his face.

Until next time… Happy (do it for the kids) Running!

Moving Music Monday ~ We Will Rock You... by Queen

Pain is the body's way of ridding itself of weakness.
~ Dean Karnazes
Well blogosphere… today’s song is an oldie, but goodie.  “We Will Rock You” needs no introduction.  It is a crowd favorite.  Do you remember stomping your feet on the belchers when this song pumped through the sound system?  Did your pep band rock this tune to get the crowd pumped? Individually it never lets you down either.  Freddie Mercury and I hit the pavement HARD when this one rolls around.  So without further ado…
let today’s tune motivate you to get up and move something!

Until next time... Happy (get to rocking) Running

MY SURVIVOR DAY ~ 10/5!!!

But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,

And by His stripes we are healed. ~ Isaiah 53:5

My son (the lion) at the birthday
party during my week and a half
of so called "Gas"... LOL
I was in so much pain during this party,
but I didn't let this little guy know it.
In case you didn’t know… I almost died on 10/5/11… literally.  After suffering for over a week and a half with what I thought was GAS (LOL)… it was determined that I had a very serious medical problem.  During the week and a half of "gas", I didn't stop from the  pain.  I nursed my hubby after having eye surgery, cleaned the house, donated items to Goodwill, flew to Houston for sorority business, took my son to a birthday party, I even tried to go back to work. At one point I was waiting for my medications to be filled at Walmart and I was crying in pain on the bench.  A perfect stranger asked if she could pray with me.  We sat right there on the pharmacy bench and prayed to God.  She didn’t know me from Adam, but she knew the God she served could meet all of my needs. Ooh Wee... the power of God!

The morning of the 5th my sweet hubby got my son dressed and took him to school.  While he was gone… I managed to crawl out of the bed and boot up my laptop.  This is how anal I am folks.  I proceeded to pay ALL OF MY BILLS.  Then I cleaned myself up in the bathroom. Put on fresh undergarments and clothes.  Wrapped my hair and got back in the bed.  Yes… I was doubled over in incredible pain when I did all of this.  Just because I am a medical professional… doesn’t make me smart. LOL!

My husband came home and rushed me to the ER at Medical City Dallas.  He held my hand and tried not to make me laugh as 2 nurses and 1 paramedic tried and failed to get an IV started on me.  I know am a hard stick, but I was just about to start my own darn IV after all of that.  I remember getting a lot of “GOOD DRUGS” while I was in there.  I guess that IV was good for something. :-)  Pain was a far away concept after a while.  LOL!  We were in the ER all day.  Having test after test and blood draw after blood draw.  I was really starting to lose it.  My personal OB/GYN (Dr. Joseph Carlos) was on-call for the ER. When he heard I was in the ER he rushed to my side.  Dr. Carlos is a awesome man of God and a wonderful doctor.  He actually hummed spiritual songs to me and held my hand as I wept softly during one of my tests.  GOD IS GOOD!

It was finally determined that I needed an exploratory laparotomy procedure because they weren’t quite sure what was wrong.  Dr. Ramon Quinones, another awesome man of God and great surgeon, was the Attending assigned to my case.  He strolled in and I just gazed at him. By this time folks I was higher than a kite on a beautiful windy Spring day, but let me tell you something… this dude right here… looked just like my father. I am not kidding. Even my husband agreed.  When he came closer to me I just had to say something.  I know good and darn well that drugs can take away a lot of your inhibitions (and common sense), but I wanted him to know that through my drug laced haze… I was still sane.  I said “Dr. Quinones… I want you to know that you look a lot like my Dad.  Soooo… when I wake from my anesthesia induced sleep and call you DADDY… just go with it… OK”.  He just laughed.  I don’t think he believed me, but we will come back to this point later.

During the surgery it was determined that I had ruptured my appendix. I also had an abscess the size of a baseball and a small bowel obstruction requiring 6 inches of intestine to be removed.  During my recovery my surgeon showed me pictures of the surgery.  It looked like a bomb went off inside of my body.  I was seriously sick people and remained in the hospital for 2 weeks.  During the 2 weeks they also had to rule out if I had thrown a pulmonary embolus.  WHAT!?!?

Me... a day before I was released from the hospital
Still a little high, but my smile was slowly coming back... LOL
My husband was great during my convalescence.  He spent every night with me and slept on one of those incredibly uncomfortable fold out hospital couches. He would wake up during the night if I needed anything.  Sweet huh, well it gets sweeter.  He stayed with me all night… then he would wake up, for real, and go to our house… wake up my parents… get my son ready for school… load my parents and my son into the car… drop my son off at school… drop my parents off at the hospital to be with me… then go to work all day… pick up my parents at the end of the day… pick up my son and take them all home… then come back to the hospital to be with me.  He did this the whole time I was in the hospital.
Yep… my Honey Bunny is a keeper folks.

Some of the well wishes I received
in the hospital
I was so blessed when I was in the hospital. Family, friends, sorors and co-workers came to visit me and called me.  People sent their well wishes and flowers.  My son’s Pre-School teacher even watched him for the first two nights I was in the hospital so my husband could be by my side.  My sister-in-law slept in a hard hospital chair by my bedside so my husband could get some much needed rest. My mom helped me with everything and I mean everything. From getting out of the bed… to using the facilities… to brushing my “girl gone wild” hair.  My sisters called me everyday… it was like they were there rooting for me every step of the way.  The love I felt from my father as he helped me walk in the hospital halls, grinning from ear to ear, was palpable.  One of my previous patients even had his church mission team make me a prayer knot blanket (a prayer is said for each knot tied on the blanket).  The staff at Medical City was great too!  They have truly earned their Magnet status and then some.  I tried not to tell anyone that I was in the medical field when I was there, but it is pretty hard when some of the doctors on your case actually know you.  For instance the Internal Medicine doctor consulted on my case was one of the physicians dedicated to my hospital UR committee that I personally chair.  So much anonymity... LOL.  God lined up a good team of doctors on my case.  I could not have been happier.  There were times I couldn’t stop the tears of joy from streamed down my face.  Know this… God Is Awesome and he knows what he is doing.

These are the Coach sunglasses I
purchased to help with
my recovery... LOL!
So I finally got released and went home. My recovery was slow and hard.  There were many times I cried myself to sleep due to the pain.  Depression even tried to creep in and rear it’s ugly head. One of my sisters flew down to be with me and she held my pathetic little hand when I hit rock bottom.  She let me get out all of my tears.  I could not understand why I wasn’t getting better.  She sat on the edge of my bed and talked me down from the ledge I had created for myself.  There were so many times I thought the light at the end of the tunnel was a train coming right at me, but it was only God shinning his light so I knew which direction to find him.

I finally made it to my first follow up appointment with my surgeon.  You know your were pretty sick when the surgeon’s office staff refers to you as the “miracle patient” when they realized which patient you are.  It was determined that the baseball size abscess that God created in my body saved my life.  Most of the “bad stuff” stayed in the abscess… keeping me from going septic.  PRAISE THE LORD! Remember when I told you that the surgeon looked like my Dad.  Well (it wasn’t just the drugs talking)… I was right and the staff thought so too.  The whole team came out to sneak a peak at my Dad.  My surgeon and my Dad could have been 1st cousins or something.  Dr. Quinones was great and his staff was wonderful.  His head nurse told me that Dr. Q has his entire staff pray for ALL of his patients.
IS THAT NOT INCREDIBLE!!

Well… as you can guess… I finally recovered. To God be the glory.  I have absolutely NO DOUBT that God has a purpose for my life. So I have vowed to celebrate 10/5 as my Survivor Day. It’s incredible how much your perspective on life can change when you ALMOST DIE! I try to live everyday knowing that I have a purpose.

However, 10/5 is a concrete reminder for me that I have the sweet victory that comes with being a child of the King.  The Big Guy upstairs saw fit to keep me around… so I know there is a purpose I am still around.  I even was fortunate enough to attend a church service that “perfect stranger” that prayed for me at Walmart.  Look at God go!!!  When I finished my last half marathon… I had tears in my eyes… thinking about how far God had brought me. This year on 10/5… I rolled out of bed sending praises up to God, I gave back to worthy causes, laughed with my mouth wide open, got my "fitness on", spent quality time with my family, smiled a little brighter, I reached out to love ones and made it a point to LIVE OUT LOUD! My eagle wings soared just a bit higher that day.  Amen & Amen.
Me... after my last half marathon (8/24)
Glory To God!!
Until next time… happy (thankful to be able to) running
